To Be (Sitting) Or Not To Be (Sitting)

It is no secret that the USA is one of the least healthy countries of the developed world. It’s also no secret that in past years, the amount of sitting done by Americans has increased EXPONENTIALLY. We SIT down for breakfast, we SIT on our morning commute to the office , we SIT at work, we SIT in meetings, we SIT for lunch, we SIT while slouching over our phones, we SIT on our drive home, we SIT while eating dinner and then we SIT gathered around the television (or hopefully a good book) and then… time for bed! It turns out, that in total the average American sits between 8-10 hours per day!

According to a study done in Britain, lower activity levels were associated with low cognitive performance, poor fluid intelligence, lowered capacity to think logically and solve problems. According to a Harvard Medical School professor, the brain responds like a muscle… It withers with inactivity and grows with use. “What’s even more disturbing, and what virtually no one realizes, is that inactivity is killing our brains – physically shriveling them,” he says.


New (and more uplifting research) says that for children with a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) that stand 8 hours per day increases their metabolic rate by 25%! That means that if you stand for 8 hours and are accustomed to a 2,000 calorie/day diet… you can now eat up to 2,500 calories! The same study found that obese children who chose to stand were able to increase their metabolic rate by around 35%! Consider that fun fact while enjoying Thanksgiving dinner … standing leaves more room for pie 😊
