Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 1 in every 4 deaths is related to heart disease with over 610,000 lives lost every year in the U.S. alone. This can be preventable with the right nutrition, exercise, sleep and a normal functioning nerve system.
1. EPA And DHA (Fish Oil)
EPA and DHA are omega-3 essential fatty acids that have widespread health benefits from controlling inflammation to helping with diabetes. There are several hundred studies that have shown the cardio-protective effects of omega-3’s. When choosing a good fish oil it’s important to look for some specific qualities before making the purchase.
- EPA/DHA content. If the front of the bottle says “1000mgs of fish oil” but the back ingredients says 150mg of EPA……run. EPA/DHA is the specific fatty acids that make up what your body needs from a fish oil. You want most, if not all of the fish oil content to be EPA/DHA. If it does not, you should question what the other content is in that fish oil.
- “Molecularly distilled” – This means that through the processing of the fish oil that all of the solvents, chemicals, and other additives are removed for purification. You want your fish oil to be molecularly distilled.
- Fish burps – You should NOT get fish burps from a quality fish oil product. This means that through the manufacturing process or transportation process that the fish oil has gone rancid. The type of chemical bonds that make up the fats in fish oil are unstable. This means depending on the environment it is in, it can go rancid more easily if not processed properly. Quality fish oil should not cause fish burps.
When it comes to heart health, research shows that supplementing with quality fish oil decreases the risk of heart disease, reduced levels of triglycerides in the blood, prevents clot formation in arteries, reduces inflammation, and may even help lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol!
2. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
CoQ10 is a coenzyme that works in the mitochondria which is the “powerhouse” of the cell where it assists in making energy. It primarily acts as an antioxidant in the heart but it also helps in stabilizing cell membranes. Over 30 years of research have shown the potential of CoQ10 in the prevention and treatment of heart disease. CoQ10 has been shown to prevent damage to the heart during periods of stress. It also has been shown to replenish good quality cholesterol in patients taking cholesterol lowering drugs and even reported to improve quality of life in patients following a heart attack.
3. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
Niacin metabolizes carbohydrates and fats to produce energy. When supplementing, Niacin acts as a potent vasodilator that helps blood vessels relax and increase in diameter. Keep in mind when supplementing for the first few times, Niacin will cause a ‘flushing’ effect and there will be redness and some tingling. This is normal and nothing to be alarmed over. Tolerance will be achieved after the first few times and these symptoms will eventually go away.
Niacin has been shown to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) by as much as 12% and triglycerides by 28%. Research also shows it can improve good cholesterol (HDL) by as much as 25% and may even decrease the risk of having a heart attack or stroke!
Finally, remember that just like your vehicle won’t work properly without the electrical components of it communicating with all of its parts…..neither will your heart! Your heart depends on neurological communication to and from the brain at all times for it to function normally. The majority of the control for the heart like blood pressure and heart rate happens in the brain stem, the extension of the brain just below it near the top of the spine. When the foundation of the spine (atlas) has shifted out of its normal position and alignment, pressure and stress is put on the brainstem. This interferes with the electrical communication from the brain to the heart which can leave the heart more susceptible to dysfunction. Protect your heart health with these top 3 supplements and don’t forget to have your spine and nerve system checked sooner rather than later.
