Chiropractor in Colorado Springs CO Explains 3 Tips to Prevent Neck Pain
With working at home and from a computer being so common, neck pain is amazingly prevalent in today’s society. Fortunately, there are many things that we “should do,” to prevent neck pain along with several simple things we can easily do to reduce already present neck pain. Many things can cause neck pain, from muscular tension, disc bulges, arthritis or simply tension from frustrations caused by something bad that happened in your 7th zoom meeting for the day. For those wise enough to look for prevention, there are several simple things that your chiropractor in Colorado Springs CO will outline.
Preventing Neck Pain in Colorado Springs CO
1.) Movement. Did your mother ever tell you “If you keep making that face, it will get stuck that way?” Well from a movement standpoint it still may ring true. When we think about movement from a preventative perspective we want to move before we get “stuck that way.” According to a recent article, 5 minutes of brisk walking in between every hour of sitting can undo a massive amount of stress in the spine, nervous system and cardiovascular system. Strengthening and stretching the entire body can also allow for a more stable base of support for your precious neck.
2.) Posture. For every inch your head goes forward there is an estimated 10 lbs. of stress put onto the muscles, disc, nerves and ligaments. This stress might not be a big issue at first but compound that extra 10 lbs. of stress by 8 hours per day and 40+ hours per week for 10 – 50 years and we are talking about a huge accumulation of added weight that your neck has to carry! For proper positioning to prevent neck pain, we want the following: Ears over shoulders, shoulders down and back, elbows tucked into their side and bent to 90 degrees. Although we should be able to comfortably hold positions differently than this with minimal discomfort – It is the time under improper tension that can lead to dramatic structural changes of the neck anatomy.
3.) Hydration. Some of the most important parts of the neck anatomy are the discs. These discs act as cushions for the bones and are meant to be robust, thick, and mobile. The main factor for disc health is a combination of positioning and hydration. If the position of the head compresses the discs plus there is a lack of readily available fluid for the discs to absorb and maintain their healthy structure, over time decay and compression will likely occur. Regarding water recommendations, the best fluid to drink is obviously water, spring water is best. The amount of water we want to drink is based on body weight and generally, the recommendation is ½ of a person's body weight in ounces. Essentially a 200 lb person should drink 100 oz/ day.
