My interest in learning to become a POTS specialist in Colorado Springs CO. By finding my niche in the world of healthcare and changing my focus from traditional pop twist and crack chiropractic to that of Foundational NUCCA Correction, we have had innumerable patients report being told by a doctor or specialist that their pain or internal health disorder is “ALL IN YOUR HEAD.” Truth be told, while searching for answers pertaining to personal health concerns, I clearly remember AT LEAST TWO physicians saying the exact same thing.

Now, everyone knows that the brain controls everything. It coordinates the 5 senses such as movement/position, vision, smell, taste, and hearing but also coordinates the things we don’t think about, such as digestion, heart rate/rhythm, hormonal output, cellular reproduction, sexual reproduction, bowel/bladder and many more functions.

What is POTS in Colorado Springs CO?

Often times a diagnosis of Dysautonomia or POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) is given along with other diagnoses such as Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, or Vaso-Vagal Syncope. Some of the common symptoms of Dysautonomia and POTS include:

  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Heart palpitations
  • Anxiety
  • Spikes in heart rate (Tachycardia)
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Inability to focus
  • Migraines and headaches

When examining all of these (secondary) conditions individually, it is hard to understand how or why they could all be connected… until you look at how the Autonomic (automatic) Nervous System functions. For simple understanding I’d like to break down the Autonomic Nervous System functions into two groups which can both be stimulated by the Vagus Nerve.

Parasympathic – Also known as the Rest, Digest and Relax part of the nervous system. This system is truly at work when we are relaxed, it allows food to digest properly, it allows sleep to happen, it even allows for sexual arousal to occur.

Sympathetic – Also known as the Fight or Flight functions of the nervous system. This system should only be activated in situations of extremely high stress, such as being chased by a predator, fighting for your life, or asking your boss for a raise. When the prior situations happen, your body responds by getting ready for battle… increased heart rate, pumping blood into the arms and legs, pumping blood away from the digestive system, and kick starting the mind to look for potential threats (if you’re running from a lion, tripping over that rock could be your last).

As you can see, a lot of the (secondary) conditions associated with POTS and Dysautonomia are very similar to the functions of the body when the sympathetic nervous system is activated. Having this system activated can literally be lifesaving, however keeping it on for weeks, months or years on end can lead to burning the system out. With burnout you see people chronically stressed, ageing faster, along with having higher incidences heart diseases and stroke!

How Can A POTS Specialist Help?

A very simplistic reiteration of how gentle Foundational NUCCA Corrective care helps patients with these diseases… We “take pressure” off the nerve that stimulates the sympathetic portion of the nervous system and allows the brain to communicate better to the body… From a scientific standpoint, a lot more research needs to be done. From a clinical standpoint we have simply learned that for the right POTS candidates that results can be pretty great!

At Balance Chiropractic in Colorado Springs our methods of correcting the upper neck include zero popping twisting or cracking. Our doctors use a series of objective measurements to first see if someone is a candidate, then we retake those objective measurements through out your correctional process to make sure we are getting reproducible results.
